Median Salary Goes up to $120,000 for the Class of 2017 at Tepper

The Class of 2017 at the Carnegie Mellon Tepper School of Business managed to get a median starting salary of $120,000 compared to $117,000 in the previous year.

More than 40% of the graduates found employment in technology companies, in contrast to the scenario a decade ago, when the financial services industry employed the maximum number of graduates. This year, Finance could attract only 15% of the class.

The Mean salary was pegged at $119,402, low at $50,000 and high at $152,500. The Mean signing bonus was $30,101, median $25,000, low $5,000 and high $88,500.

In 2007, when the US economy was hit by recession in the wake of the bursting of the housing bubble, about 29% of Tepper graduates had found employment in the financial services sector. The top employers that year were Deutsche Bank, Deloitte and Bank of America. At that time, only 17% of the graduates had opted for the technology sector.

Stephen Rakas, executive director of Tepper’s Career Opportunities Center, attributed the change to the spread of technology across all sectors and all aspects of the people’s life. The present generation’s affinity for technology was also a contributing factor, he added.

A record 58% of the female graduates took up positions with technology companies, up from 45% in 2016. The top three employers were Amazon, which hired 15% of the graduates, followed by Microsoft and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

After technology, the next biggest employer was the consulting industry, which hired 20% of the graduates.

Of the total 203 graduates, 26 had not sought employment, with 7 company sponsored or already employed, 1 postponing the decision, 15 starting a new business and 3 citing other reasons.

The Mean salary was pegged at $119,402, low at $50,000 and high at $152,500. The Mean signing bonus was $30,101, median $25,000, low $5,000 and high $88,500.

The graduates’ primary source of job acceptance was school-facilitated activities 83.70% and student facilitated activities 15.90%.

In terms of compensation by undergraduate major, Technical saw 83 job accepts (53.50%) with a mean salary of $120,535 and median of $123,000. Business had 47 job accepts (30.30%) with a mean salary of $117,446 and median of 120,000.
