IIM-C Finance Lab Holds India Research Conference In Association With NYC Stern Business School

India Research Conference, organised by the Finance Lab of Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM-C) in association with the Stern Business School of New York University on May 20, 2016, was the first of its kind organised by an IIM outside India to showcase its research in the area of empirical finance and corporate governance.

The conference brought together the world’s leading academic and industry experts for an in-depth discussion of India’s financial markets and implications for the global economy. John Lipsky, former first deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund was the keynote speaker in the conference.

For IIM-C, the main takeaway from the conference, aimed at promoting India-centric research in empirical finance and corporate governance, was to develop deeper knowledge about the interests about issues concerning India’s financial markets among academics in the US and Europe.

Apart from possibilities of collaborative research for IIM-C faculty with academics in the US and Europe, networking opportunities in the event would help identify researchers interested to work with Indian data, Professor Ashok Banerjee, who specialises in Finance and Control, said prior to the conference.

The event was sponsored by the Finance Lab of IIM Calcutta and co-hosted by the Center for Global Economy and Business and Salomon Center for the Study of Financial Institutions of NYU – Stern.

Five papers were presented in the Conference followed by a panel discussion on “Unleashing growth in rural India.”

While Viral V. Acharya (NYU Stern) and V. Ravi Anshuman (IIM Bangalore) presented a paper titled Foreign Fund Flows and Asset Prices, Ramin P. Baghai an Bo Becker (Stockholm School of Economics) presented a paper on Non-Rating Revenue and Conflicts of Interest.

Mila Getmansky (University of Massachusetts at Amherst), Ravi Jagannathan (Northwestern University Kellogg School of Business) and Loriana Pelizzon (Goethe University), Ernst Schaumburg (Federal Reserve Bank of New York) presented at paper titled Stock Market Liquidity: Role of Short-term and Long-term Traders.

Abhiman Das (Reserve Bank of India), Prachi Mishra (Reserve Bank of India), R. Prabhala (University of Maryland and CAFRAL India) paper titled The Transmission of Monetary Policy Within Banks: Evidence from India. Sudip Gupta (Indiana University), Rangarajan K. Sunaram (NYU Stern School of Business), Suresh Sundaresan (Columbia University) paper titled Auctioning the Underwriting Spread: Implications for Information Production and Insurance.
